Nigeria is yet to domesticate international treaties, conventions and conferences centred on children's rights and others, hence the abuse of rights of young people. The Nigerian government has failed to implement the protocols on human rights entered with other nations of the world.Youth rights is the most abused because it is not mentioned in the country's constitution, while there were inadequate provisions made by the Nigerian laws and policies on key issues concerning the rights of young people.
The Nigerian constitution is silent on the minimum age for marriage, carnal knowledge of a child under 16years,adolescents' health decision making, even as the country have laws that restrict access to services such as abortion, rape among others.
Also, the recognition and protection of customary and religious laws have adverse effects on the sexual and reproductive rights and health of adolescents, especially girls and women.Section 55 of the Penal Code operational in the northern part of Nigeria provides for "wife chastisement, provided no grievious bodily harm is inflicted on her".
How I wish that June 16th(International Day of the African Child) of every year will be a holiday for schools to enable young people drum up support for the implementation of their rights.
